Shopify SEO – How to Rank Your Shopify Website in the Search Engines.

Some simple Shopify Tips to help you rank. (or we can do it for you 🙂  )

Most Shopify Themes take advantage of Shopify’s built in SEO functions. Each page, collection, product and article all have the ability for you to create a specific title, link and meta description. The 3 pillars of SEO.

You can use Shopify’s built in SEO functions along with adding some apps to improve performance from the Shopify App Store but sometimes these apps will slow your website down or actually interfere with manual SEO efforts in place by anyone that is helping you with Organic SEO.

Here are some Shopify apps that can help improve the SEO of your site.

  • A great automatic way of compressing large images. This is crucial for Shopify sites.

  • Schema App Total Schema Markup:  Adds custom structured data to your site.

  • Smart SEO: An app that can add meta tags, alt tags, etc.

  • Yotpo Reviews: This app automates how you add product reviews to your site. Rich review stars in the SERPs.

  • Rewind Backups: Creates backups of your site automatically. Shopify does not back up your data for you. You can manually export customers, orders, products, but the rest of your data is at risk  (ie: affiliate link 🙂 )

It is best to first have a Search Engine Professional who is well versed in Shopify (ie: Like After Dark Grafx who also happens to be a Shopify Partner ) first take a look at your website, your Shopify Apps, the pages, blogs, collections and products to see how they are setup along the lines of SEO.

Most people will simply leave the default settings in place and expect to rank for their products or article. This is a big NO NO. This is not recommended if you plan on getting your pages and products listed in the top positions in Google and other engines.

That is where After Dark Grafx comes in! (theme music here please)

Improving your SEO – Basic Shopify Tips to Help You Rank

To optimize your online store for search engines, you can follow a few basic steps:

  1. Find keywords that are relevant to your products and your brand. What search terms can customers use to find your store? You can use tools like Google’s Keyword Planner or Keywords Everywhere (excellent Chrome Extension)
  2. Add the keywords into your content, including page titles, descriptions, and image alt text.
  3. Make sure that your URLs and file names match the content. Example: Purina Plan Pro Beef Wet Dog Food is our Keyword. We would want to have a page called  purina-pro-plan-beef-dog-food (Shopify will do this for you if you name the product or page exactly as above). If you place images on this page, you will want to make sure the images are named after the keyword like this purina-pro-plan-beef-wet-dog-food.jpg then when you upload it be sure to select the image again and edit and add an ALT tag with the same keyword. This tells the engines that your whole page is about this keyword.
  4. Add your full domain (for example: to Google Search Console, so that your online store website can be easily crawled and indexed.
